An Important Editorial Note by the Today’s News Staff

Sorry about that last news headline. Just fired the little bastard, where were we? Bad day here. We are a very important, non-lying news organization. It has come to our attention that there is no news today of any kind, except for three more essays by Victor Davis Hanson that would put people in jail if there were anyone left in this nation with an eighth grade reading ability. There isn’t. OMG. Tetrazzini? There just isn’t. Any News. Look in tomorrow. We will dig deep for news. Promise. There’s one really long article about climate change we could post today. We’re still thinking about. Check back later. Chet thinks it’s hot stuff. Which is kind of our subtitle. The Undercritters are under orders to give you ten Hot Headlines. They’re telling me the union will act up if we make them look bad. So, after the The Climate Change thing, just wing it, okay? It’s not News. _______________ Ed. I’ve been learning of late about the limitations of this Blogger software, which runs out of gas after a few paragraphs and can’t handle many links or drawings or videos, all of which I’ve done by the thousands or dozens in other venues as the writing required. I’ve also been learning because I’m trying to decide if I have one year left or twenty as a writer. One if I’m really done with all the fakers and nihilists and toy soldiers. Twenty if I can beat the odds and wring one more important work out of these old bones. The problem has always been slowing my mind down. It operates at all levels. Including the vulgar, comic, and slapstick level. The mind of a mind like mine never ever ever stops . It’s exhausting and supposedly life shortening. UPDATE: Another GOPe Fizzle

Image
The C-Span Video is here . Their embed code doesn’t work. Figures. Last week, IPR posted some questions about a Republican Hill staffer (Emeritus) who published an Op-Ed declaring that the Mueller Report Volume II wish list contained valid grounds for impeachment of the President. Google took note of him. Plenty. Nobody else did. That’s the update. I kept an eye out for responses from the pro-Trump side of the aisle. There were none. The fact of a Republican (so-called) turncoat didn’t make even a blip on the big screen of the Internet. Nobody who mattes cares. A nonentity is a nonentity is a nonentity. Typical Dumbass GOPe chicanery. At least they have deniability. Like the way they stare off into the horizon when somebody asks them what they did to rein in the truly treasonous president who preceded Trump and the treasonous witch who ran against him. Which was nothing. So far, even this long after the fact, effectively nothing. Nothing. What does GOPe nothingness

There’s this very rich prep school called Mercersburg. An alumni relations officer there organized a 50th Anniversary re-enactment of an act of protest carried out in the spring of 1969 in the school’s chapel. InstaPunk was the student journalist on the scene (Don’t take this link to FB unless you know how to get back here.) InstaPunk was invited and declined, said goodbye. The alumni official was fine with that, though noting that she had bought one of IP’s books for her dad, which he liked. There the matter rested. Except for Mrs. IP. Who wondered why nobody cared enough to look deeper and publish more about the most interesting guy the school had produced in half a century. Ain’t life grand? (Want to get caught up to what Jenn supposedly has looked at? Here . 2001 chapters 10 years almost to the day before 9/11. Not interesting to Mercersburg . Or never looked at.)

Two Women Volunteer to Stand Near Joe Biden at Rallies

They met him through The Hair Club for Anonymous , where he was a sponsor. Names withheld here for obvious reasons. But they smell like Chanel and sound like silk slips when they walk right in front of you. Joe’s reputation doesn’t worry them. They just know he was a vice president of Congress or something and that they know “damn well how to raise Cain if some baldy gets handsy at a meeting.” Straight talk if we ever heard it. Time will tell what Joe thinks he knows about them.

Harry Brown. The Ghost Of Harry Palmer.

Image
Harry never did get along with authority. After a long while, they don’t get along with you anymore either. They reform you out to pasture, away from violence. You get the astigmatism fixed with laser surgery. You have a nicely anonymous new identity as a garden variety military hero. You get married. You live modestly but contentedly in a Council flat. Until it all goes pear-shaped and something needs to be done. Some blokes who need to be, you know, done and dusted. This movie ends with a funeral too. Whose? You’ll have to find that out for yourself. You can see it all in Harry Brown, on Amazon.

The Highwaymen

Image
When Netflix first started bugging me to watch The Highwaymen , I wasn’t much interested. I saw Arthur Penn’s Bonny and Clyde when it came out in 1967, once, and found the subject inherently over-conducive to allegorical treatment and hence vulnerable to faddish propaganda exploitation. Which was certainly the case with the ’67 movie, starring two great beauties of the day, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, and capitalizing on the rapidly rising resentment of police (i.e., pigs), the sex appeal of anarchic youth rebellion against authority, and a newly chic stylistic lingering over scenes of cinematic violence — thanks to movie pioneer Sam Peckinpah’s daring slo-mo, extreme closeups, bloody montages in driving stereo sound, and unprecedentedly graphic bullet strikes and arterial spray, etc.  The net effect of Bonny and Clyde was, finally, political. The concluding scene was the most cold-blooded display of sanctioned police brutality yet filmed in Hollywood. A long row of

Behind the WSJ Pay Wall: Best Impeachment Poll

Excerpts from 4/28/19 WSJ article The Most Telling Impeachment Poll: “When asked by a reporter at the White House on Monday if he’s worried about impeachment, President Donald Trump responded, “Not even a little bit.” Most Democrats running for President don’t seem to think he should be worried, either. In fact they don’t even want to talk about it. The reaction of this particular cohort of Democrats is interesting because after Donald Trump and his team, they are the people with the most at stake in the issue this year. Eventually one will earn the right to face Mr. Trump in the 2020 general election but right now they are vying for Democratic votes and donations. Trump seems quite happy to speak about it... His potential 2020 rivals, meanwhile, aren’t necessarily warming to the topic. Joshua Jamerson and Ken Thomas write in the Journal that a number of candidates have been cautious in addressing the issue... Asked if impeachment should be on the table at this point, Mr. Booker o

Thar She Blows! Loud and Real Clear.

Saw the headline on somebody’s Facebook link. I stopped checking in on RealClearPolitik a couple years ago. Their rolling mish-mash approach to polls offends me, insisting as it does on the moderateness of averaging apples and oranges with bat guano and calling the result Information. Their editorial policy is similarly offputting. Steering a wobbly course down the middle, being very careful not to veer too far to the right in particular, is not a good strategy for surviving on a two-lane highway, and in political discussions it leads to sitting alone in the corner by the punchbowl, with too many empty shrimp tails on your paper plate. Goldberg territory these days. Speaking of whales. After a very long day of reading, I didn’t feel like wading through the article myself, so I asked my wife to do it for me. She chafed through long paragraphs of nothing about an orange cetacean, noting that there was a “a lot of something for this side, something for that side,” until seven gra

Some Casual Questions about J. W. Verret

Odd level for a sudden player. Not on Wiki that I could find. A fire with no fuel. Prestigious associations on his resume — Harvard Law, Republican Hill staffer, Trump pre-transition team, assignments advising congressional committees in finance matters during Obama admin, apparent 10 yrs of active but opaque GOPe affiliation. So whose number did he have on speed dial to get a flurry of Op-ed gigs and media appearances? How does his Tweet go viral? Maybe somebody’s explained all this, but I haven’t seen anyone asking. How does a bench sitting utility infielder suddenly wind up entered in the All-Star Homerun Contest? Hmmmm. Who does he know? Who knows him? Any real specifics, anecdotes, memories of him? If you wanted an ideal mole, a public GOP Trojan horse on impeachment, who would you pick? Accomplished enough, connected enough not to be ignored, or automatically dismissible, but low enough on totem pole not to be on the radar or easily discoverable in terms of his r

News Spotlight on “Why Conspiracy Theories Never Die” — 4/23/2019

Image
If you’ve looked at Today’s News , you probably found a fine little essay by Christopher Chantrill called Why Conspiracy Theories Never Die . He tells us: “Now that the whole Russia Collusion conspiracy theory gussied up by the deep state/Clinton campaign/fake media communities has proved to have been much ado about nothing, there is the question about what comes next? What do all the believers do now that their fantasy lies in ruins? The answer is obvious, and is practiced by all millennial cults prophesying the end of the world. You loudly announce that nothing has changed, you patch up the prophecies, and you declare that the world is still going to come to an end, only a bit later than previously forecast.” Cult is the right word and the mainstream bluenose media is fully on board, as you can see in the TV series trailer up top and in the flattering coverage of Al Gore and other climate change propagandists . Even when some harebrained theory has come completely unraveled, th

Buttigieg Accused of Stealing Cheap Political Trick from Fellow Harvard Grad

Image
Everyone has seen the photo up top of the tender kiss exchanged between Pete Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten(?) Something, during his presidential candidacy announcement. They may not have heard some of the dark muttering from the Trump camp that this was actually a cheap campaign trick swiped from the 2000 Dem candidate Al Gore. He and his husband wife Tipper put on a remarkably similar display at the Democratic Convention that year. The mainstream press luv-luv-luvved it. Pretty much like they sorta luv-luvved Buttigigg’s smackeroo with Chasten(?) Something. If this was a stunt, as the photographic evidence would seem to prove, what advantage is Buttigieg expecting to gain from his over-the-top Gore-esque showboating? Not hard to figure. Same old same old. The Democrats are already making hay out of the attention Buttigieg is attracting from bigoted white conservatives who have always hated gays almost as much as they hate Harvard (for mostly the same reasons).

Comment to FB Doyenne Debra J. Saunders

Image
She posted a link to her own column at the Las Vegas Review-Journal with the teaser subhead “Saving Trump from himself.” I was the first to comment: “Saving Trump from himself.” Nonsense. Trump haters are the masters of having their cake and eating it too. Trump is authoritarian — he surrounds himself with toadies who agree with everything he says or follow him blindly. Trump is incompetent at picking staff — he keeps firing so many the WH looks like a revolving door. Trump is so volatile and unstable that it takes his staff to save him from catastrophic errors, which enables us to see how truly weak and in over his head he is. Which is it? You can’t have it all. Most likely, Trump is a tough boss, a hard taskmaster with little patience for screwups. His White House must be a contentious place, maybe with lots of yelling. (Of what President has it NOT been said that he had a temper and blew his stack at times? GWB maybe, and possibly some others who came to be criticized for

Reposted Because. What No One on Any Side Will Say About Trump

Image
Reposted from March 6, 2019 He’s been called everything nasty under the sun and has been subjected to the most massive, determined, and irrational campaign to destroy him any president has ever faced. At CPAC he showed how he has weathered the storm. His presentation was relaxed, conversational, refreshingly and appealingly candid, and very much in command of his growing base of supporters. Those who back him have praised him for many things. For being a fighter, a deadly counterpuncher, a bold outsider, a shrewd negotiator, a skillful tactician, and a tireless achiever and survivor. What no one seems to want to say out loud about this man who arrived on the presidential stage with no previous political experience is what should be dead obvious to everyone, friend and foe alike. Donald Trump is a brilliant politician, very possibly a political genius without peer in American history. Democrats can’t admit it because it’s indispensable to their characterizations of Trumpian i

Slam-dunk photographic and documentary evidence. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected Pope on April 19, 2005 , and served as Pope Benedict XVI until he abdicated in February 2013. FB’s Linda Cerullo chose to remind us of today of a continuing unsolved mystery about that abdication: "Did billionaire speculator George Soros, President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, and Obama/Clinton adviser John Podesta conspire to overthrow the conservative Pope Benedict XVI and replace him with a radical, Pope Francis? Did they use America’s intelligence agencies, and our nation’s diplomatic machinery, political muscle, and financial power to coerce and blackmail “regime change” in the Roman Catholic Church? ‘Far from being some wild conspiracy theory, there is sound prima facie evidence to indicate that this is a serious effort to expose a political scandal of the highest order, involving flagrant, criminal abuse of power at the top level
