The Best Book on the Trump Phenomenon

UPDATED MARCH 15, 2025, with the addition of Volume II below. Everybody rushed in after the fact to be first with the goods on how Trump pulled off the biggest electoral upset in modern presidential history. I was already ahead of them though. I had been covering the political briar patch with a steady diary approach for four presidential election cycles, both terms of W, the meteoric rise and weird re-election of Barack Obama, and of course the first flutterings of the Republican country club riot over replacing him. I had three blogs to draw from over that time, and a couple+ books out of it, including one demonstrating that I had Obama  figured out long before even his fiercest beltway critics caught on. What’s hard is to find ways that women who presume to speak for women (i.e., 20 to 21st Century feminists) formulate their arguments without resort to Occam’s Razor . What they’re feeling right now is the right answer, therefore the easiest one to accept unless you want to be branded a sexist. An emotional rant intended [fixing an Autocorrect goof] to intimidate rather than persuade an audience to a desired outcome is Occam all the way. Here’s a tweet that was published just this morning: An easy answer guaranteed to fix everything. Guess how many agree . It’s a lot easier to be provocative than it is to be persuasive. PREFATORY NOTE:  This post was half written by Sunday evening (yesterday) and has suddenly become more directly relevant [correcting previous AutoCorrect goof] with Monday morning’s display of panic by the mass media, Wall Street, academic economists, and UniParty politicians, including a notable chunk of Republican Senators. Their response to the Trump Tariff Ultimatum is classic Occam’s Razor stuff, basically saying, “Look at the Stock Market! It’s obvious that this is a calamitously wrong policy.” A response achieved by jumping right to an answer with no resort to logic, mathematical proofs, or anything more rational than headline hysteria. A Near-Perfect Microcosm of “The Swamp”

Ontogeny recapitulates philogeny. There’s an intensely contemporary reason for taking a close look at Scientology. The Swamp is so huge it seems like the Borg. But what are the stripped down essentials of the Borg? Here’s a look at a laboratory example, a microcosm if you will. In the interests of full disclosure, I did encounter Scientology back in the weird year of 1968. I was in Boston, got scooped in to a “Dianetics” exercise, and got speedily thrown out for having too much “charge” to participate. The one in charge was blond, bland to the point of creepy, and I almost (but not quite) succeeded in making him lose his temper. In further interests of disclosure, I spent years on Facebook, debating Trump-haters. They did lose their tempers. I think I might be a Grimm

  A good catch by my wife is what started all this. As is our usual habit, we were watching something on TV older than the foul-mouthed, stunt-casted contemporary dreck when it rolled over into another older show called Grimm . I had heard of the series, maybe even seen some of it when it ran originally, and so we gave it a go. In the opening sequence our protagonist sees a young blonde on the sidewalk and as he watches her pretty face changes momentarily into a twisted monster version of her. Then it disappears and she goes to her car and drives away. That’s the premise of a show that ran for six years starting in 2011. The man who sees the transformation is, unbeknownst to him, a descendant of the famous Brothers Grimm who hunted down the monsters found in fairy tales.
