A Thing We Meticulously Don’t Talk About
I’ll be quoting directly in chunks here, so there can be no claim that I am cherry-picking facts, situations, narratives, or contexts.
It’s an old subject for me, as you’ll see, but I’m writing now because my wife gave me a hard time about surfacing the racial issues surrounding the mass shooting at Lincoln University, which I raised because she told me the report she’s read did not include the fact that Lincoln is one of the surviving Historically Black Colleges. This is important because the mass media are fastidious about concealing pertinent information about the identities of both shooters and victims these days. She suggested I was dragging race into a sad crime story. Then she left the room.
As I expect many of you would too. We’ve been well trained not to see this particular elephant in the room. Or at least not to discuss it. Here’s the NBC account:

One person is dead and at least six others were wounded in a shooting amid homecoming festivities Saturday night at Lincoln University, one of the nation’s first historically Black colleges, authorities said.
One person alleged to have a gun has been taken into custody, Chester County District Attorney Chris de Barrena-Sarobe said at an overnight news conference on campus. He said it was possible someone else may have opened fire as well, but investigators are still trying to piece together what happened.
“There’s some evidence that leads us to believe that that is a viable theory right now,” he said.
The DA did not provide details about a potential motive or what precipitated the gunfire. Local, state and federal law enforcement officials are investigating, he said.
The extent of injuries for the six surviving victims was not immediately available.
The attack broke out before 9:30 p.m. after crowds exited a homecoming football game and gathered outside the school’s International Cultural Center, de Barrena-Sarobe said.
Marc Partee, Lincoln University chief of police, said the violence took place as visitors gathered for a “tailgate” portion of homecoming weekend festivities.
Witnesses told NBC Philadelphia that crowds started running from reported gunfire on the campus near Oxford, Pennsylvania, in Chester County, around 9 p.m. Saturday.
Though the nature of the shooting was not clear, Chester County Commissioner Eric Roe said in a statement, “It appears there has been a mass shooting there tonight.” He called for people to join him in prayer for students, faculty and law enforcement.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said he’s offered the state’s “full support” to the school’s president, Brenda Allen, and local law enforcement.
To their credit, NBC did include the HBC membership of Lincoln, but race is not mentioned in the reporting on victims and the person “with a gun” who was detained. The problem is that race is an issue, one that has a bearing on a majority of shootings like this one involving innocent, unarmed bystanders. Wrong place at the wrong time we are told again and again. But no one wants to talk about what makes it a wrong place. The politicians default immediately to the fallback position that all places with guns are the wrong place and the problem can be resolved by outlawing the guns. That’s no doubt the direction in which Governor Josh Shapiro and Lincoln alum Mayor Cherelle Parker will spin this wholly pointless instance of murder and grievous bodily harm.
Lincoln University is not an inner city slum filled with crack houses, roaming gangs named after street corners, and drug-addicted women “in the sex trade.” It is an historically significant university, the first in the nation to grant degrees to black students. It accepted women for undergraduate study in 1953 and has two well groomed campuses in the Philadelphia area. Its student body is also 83 percent black, 6 percent Hispanic, 4 percent biracial, and 1 percent white. The history is illustrious, and this entry at Wikipedia is well worth reading in full. Firsts of all kinds, and famous alumni of both sexes.
Lincoln’s President appears at least as well qualified for her leadership position as Claudine Gay, among others, and near to my own heart, she’s a Jersey girl, always a plus.
Johnson’s Great Society and Affirmative Action were the two biggest lies ever told to black people since “separate but equal” and “Martin Luther King changed the world through peaceful résistance.”
Where did it get us? Or them? The Democrat lies. Nearly half of all black pregnancies in NYC end in abortion. More than a third of young black males wind up in prison by their early twenties. They are most notorious these days for dressing in baggy prison pants, screaming in rap doggerel that all the women they fuck, or want to, are ho’s or white bitches, and joining murderous gangs that kill children in drive-by shootings because they can’t learn how to shoot without holding the firearm sideways. And did I mention drugs? Where did they come from? They came from, guess who, the (yes!) privileged white kids of the Sixties who found the first routes to smuggle in marijuana, peyote, cocaine and its derivatives in high volume from countries far away from the south Bronx.
So. There is no systemic racism because Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington, and that guy at your Golf Club? How is it not YOUR problem that the majority members of a race we swear and affirm and declare to be completely equal to ourselves are killing each other and their own progeny at a terrifying rate? Meanwhile, you know what’s what. Forget The Talk. You hear The Voice. The one you hear when the MBA you don’t quite trust from Harvard Business School or the doctor from Johns-Hopkins poised to operate on your little girl gets exercised and dispenses with his ghetto camouflage with a burst of Ebonics. Why this is called Secondary Racism, of the Post-60s Democrat Kind, and it will never end until you take a fucking stand against the race hustlers, corrupt politicians, and incredibly evil hucksters of psychobabble non-education and used-car-dealer-mentality abortionists. Systemic? You bet your fucking ass it is. Systemic as opposed to trailer park nativism. Bigger problem than that now.
Hypocrites. Hypocrites all who don’t ask themselves these questions in hard terms, acknowledge that the easy answers of the last 50 years absolutely HAVE TO BE THE WRONG ANSWERS. Giving them stuff is like buying off your kids with toys because you have no time or inclination to talk to the little bastards. Which you don’t.
It’s a problem. A Societal Problem. (Need more federal programs, more laws, more political bullshit that keeps bankrupting cities, overlooking violence, and conspiring actively in the murder of “family” as it relates to black people. Right. WRONG.) It’s just not YOUR problem.
Because we all know in our upper middle and upper class neighborhoods that even if black people are equal in general, existential terms, the current crop ain’t equal to you and yours, and fucking-A, nobody’s ever gonna fix it.
Except maybe a president who doesn’t regard them as a glob of votes to be exploited election cycle after election cycle without ever reaching out to listen, innovate, show up where they live, and help.
