I wouldn’t be surprised…
Yeah. He’s old. What of it? He can do it. But does he have to?
…if Trump was thinking about resigning at some point.
This could all be projection on my part. Probably is. But I’m old enough to have experienced the gradual loss of patience that comes with a life full of intense contending in a lot of different arenas. You get tired of seeing the same patterns of weakness and distraction even in people you have good reason to trust.
He’s getting more irascible. I know what that’s all about. The usual army of enemies want to read this as a sign of burgeoning dementia. That’s not what it is. It’s rather the beginning of the question, “How much more of this shit is worth taking day after day? When have I done enough? When might it be appropriate to trust other younger ones to carry on, to come along from the ranks, to learn and practice the key lessons I have shown them?”
Old age is about standing back to some extent. To see things from outside the fray, patterns indicating subtler changes. I think he’s missing his time as a builder and developer. The politically controversial ballroom. The redevelopment of Lincoln Center. The new golf course renovation project. And so much time abroad. Getting away from the annoying, repetitive, dreary ruckus raised by the haters at home. But more importantly, building terms for a more peaceful future in troubled regions all over the world. Nothing that says you have to be the one to micro-manage all the nits of implementing treaties and making them work. You’ve altered the drift and made it a direction people can pursue or not.
He’s got two apprentices doing good work, learning from his example. There’s an argument that the best means of embedding MAGA for the long term is to let Vance or Rubio run in 2028 as an incumbent against whatever lame horse the clueless Democrats will run against him. At a stroke, the disloyal opposition would lose the only platform plank that unites them, Donald Trump. It won’t be easy to transfer all the Trump hatred from the colossal ogre they’ve made of him for lots of voting blocs who hate each other almost as much as they hate the one man they’ve all been trying to kill for 10 years now.
That’s how it begins. Trump beholding the childish tantrums and media narratives that cause loyalists to start squabbling publicly about bullshit. The snits of Marjorie Taylor Greene, Steve Bannon, Mark Levin, and Elon Musk. The reptilian ambitions of Ted Cruz, the other Bushwackers from Texas, and the wildly unpredictable behaviors of female contenders who are bone-deep loyalists until some trifle gets under the skin and turns them into mares gone loco.
You just get tired if you know what I mean. Yes, resigning is impossible, out of the question. I vowed I’d stay. But no one can keep his teenage daughter a virgin till marriage anymore. At some point they have to take responsibility for growing themselves up. Maybe if daddy is suddenly full time with greenskeepers at the new DC golf course… Maybe then they’ll learn to stand on their own two feet…
Nah. Got to stay the course. But, but, but it was never the case that I could do all of it by myself, indefinitely, and I don’t like the prospect of being forced by maniacal traitors into declaring the martial law they’re hoping to run against…
Maybe there’s a case for a few good years left to me…
As I said, I wouldn’t be surprised. I’ve been thinking about this off and on for a few months now. Sometimes I know he’s thinking, “Fuck y’all and the horse you rode in on, [fill in the name of your choice].”
I know I am. Don’t tell anyone what I said.
